Executive Director’s Message

Things are hopping at the border. There are reports that between 4 and 5 million square feet of new industrial space are being constructed in northern Chihuahua. This is the most new construction that the maquiladora industry has seen in years. New companies to the region such as Electrolux are fueling the recovery of this industry, which suffered a decline after the terrorist attacks of 9/11.

The new industrial activity has generated a new interest in the border on behalf of out-of-region suppliers that wish to explore their markets in Mexico. The IBA has seen increased interest on behalf of companies in or around the Paso del Norte region that are exploring their opportunities in Mexico.

For companies in the food and beverage industry, the IBA is participating in Expo Alimentab (for more information, please see the “Upcoming Events” section below), which will take place from October 27 – 29, 2005 in Chihuahua City. This trade fair is totally dedicated to the food and beverage industry. Last year, more than 1,700 appointments between buyers and sellers took place at this event. This number will be superseded this year.

The IBA will have a stand at this fair, and all IBA clients/associates will be receiving a special rate on their individual stands. We are currently seeking New Mexican companies that wish to participate in this event. If you are interested in attending Expoalimentab, please contact the IBA at 505-589-2200.

On October 6th, the IBA will be participating in the Annual Iberoamerican Research and Development Summit (AIRDS) in Albuquerque, New Mexico. This summit is a unique opportunity for companies, investors, laboratories, centers of excellence, universities, and international organizations to meet in a centralized location where they can explore partnership opportunities and prospects for international business development.
