Executive Director’s Message
I want to thank the companies from Chihuahua and Albuquerque that participated in Albuquerque-Chihuahua Trade Mission that took place on August 10 -12, 2005 in Albuquerque, New Mexico. This mission was arranged and led by the IBA, the City of Albuquerque and the City of Chihuahua. Valuable business contacts were made at the B2B roundtables during this mission, and follow-up meetings are currently being arranged.

The next two months will be busy ones for the IBA staff. We will be participating in or helping to arrange Expo Maquila, Expo Alimentab (October 27 to 29, 2005) and an upcoming El Paso-Juarez World Trade Center trade mission to China. Below, you will find more information on these events.

In 2000, the current staff of the IBA founded the Santa Teresa Charity Golf Tournament. The tournament raises money for the Honors Program at Sunland Park and Desert View Elementary Schools in Sunland Park, New Mexico. At the end of each school year, elementary students who have perfect attendance, good grades or who have performed an extraordinary act during the course of the year are awarded medals and special presidential certificates.

Last year, more than 120 players from the El Paso, Albuquerque and southern New Mexico business community participated in this event, which was sponsored by more than 50 companies and organizations. More than 10,000 dollars was raised. All the money raised goes towards the program, and all work provided for the tournament is provided on a volunteer basis.

We invite you and your company to participate in this event, which is aimed at keeping kids in our border area interested in school. For more information on this tournament, please click here.

2004 New Mexico Export Recap:

Thanks to the IBA’s partnership with Dante DiGregorio of the University of New Mexico’s Anderson Schools of Management, and support provided by the City of Albuquerque and the New Mexico Economic Development Department, the 2005 New Mexico Export Recap is complete. The final version of this publication can be accessed by visiting this link.

Although New Mexico’s trade growth with Mexico was impressive in 2004, the first half of 2005 has been disappointing. The state’s top exports to Mexico are down across the board by more than 53%. This trend is somewhat disconcerting due to the fact that Mexico’s maquiladora industry is on an upswing. What could have happened in 2004 was some type of a special peak in exports based on factors such as the establishment of the Electrolux plant in Juarez, along with a handful of new maquilas. We have to take into consideration that 2005 may be an aberration, and 2004 totals may be closer to what might be considered normal.

In 2006, we should see an upswing in exports, given the fact that Electrolux will be up and running - provided that New Mexico is successful in attracting some of this company's suppliers to the state. Economic forecasts show that the US economy should be chugging along nicely in 2006. This should also reflect positively on Mexico's economy and thus, its imports from the U.S.

The IBA is currently investigating this downturn and hopes to have more specific information in the near future.

Chihuahua City Trade Mission:

On August 10th-12th, the City of Chihuahua’s Economic Development Office and the Mexican Chamber of Industry (CANACINTRA) embarked on an exclusive trade mission to Albuquerque arranged by the IBA, the City of Albuquerque and the City of Chihuahua.  The Chihuahua group brought twelve companies to Albuquerque with the goal of making commercial contacts with businesses in Albuquerque ranging from furniture, food, beverages, cosmetics and services. The business-to-business sessions, sponsored by the City of Albuquerque’s Economic Development Office of International Trade, took place at the Embassy Suites Hotel. During their stay in Albuquerque, the Chihuahua group had the opportunity of shopping at local malls and taking a tour of the city’s Hispanic consumer markets, such as “El Mezquite Market”.

The IBA provided assistance by arranging meetings between the Chihuahua companies and counterparts in Albuquerque.  The IBA also participated by mediating the match-making sessions that took place. One of the highlights of this trade mission was an IBA-led site visit to Formulab, an Albuquerque-based cosmetics laboratory. Industrias Cosmeticas had the opportunity of touring this company’s facility to assess the costs and efficiencies of outsourcing the production of its “Pelter” brand lotion for distribution to the U.S. consumer market.
